Curitiba, the capital of Paraná, is one of the cleanest cities in Latin America and is an urban success story. The city was founded in 29 march 1693, but grew rapidly since 1940, when there were only 140.000 residents. Thousands of people came to the city and the number of residents grew rapidly till approximately 1.5 million nowadays. Most of the people descend from Italian, German and Polish immigrants. Despite this rapid grow of the city many historic buildings have been preserved. At the Centro Civico you can find five monumental buildings including the Palácio Iguaçu, which is the headquarters of the state and municipal governments. The commercial center at the busy Rua 15 de Novembro and the most popular public park is the Passeio Público in the center of the city. Furthermore you can visit different museums and different churches. The biggest attraction in the area is the train ride from Curitiba to Paranaguá. The track to Paranaguá is 110 kilometers long and goes straight through the mountains and through 13 tunnels and crosses 67 bridges. During this journey you will have some marvelous views. You will arrive in Paranaguá four hours later, after a train ride, which is the most spectacular in the whole country.
